Your journey begins in Leh (3,524 m / 11,545 ft), the cultural and administrative hub, where acclimatization is essential before venturing into higher altitudes. From Leh, the itinerary takes you across some of the world’s highest motorable passes. Khardung La (5,602 m / 18,379 ft), leading to Nubra Valley, offers a thrilling drive along steep roadwith panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Similarly, Chang La (5,360 m / 17,585 ft) on the way from Pangong Lake back to Leh provides sweeping vistas of high-altitude plains and rugged peaks.
The Karakoram ranges, visible along parts ofthe Nubra and Pangong routes, dominate the horizon with jagged snow-capped peaks, contrasting sharply with the arid desert valleys below. These ranges are part of the greater Himalayan system and create some of the most dramatic landscapes in the region
Nubra Valley offers a unique mix of high desert and mountain scenery, with sand dunes at Hunder and monasteries like Diskit, while Pangong Lake (4,350 m / 14,270 ft) enchants visitors with its brilliant blue waters that appear to change colour with the sunlight. The lake, surrounded by mountains, exemplifies Ladakh’s serene, otherworldly beauty and is one of the region’s most iconic sights
The route back to Leh passes through several ancient monasteries, including Hemis, Thiksey, and Shey, giving travellers insight into Ladakh’s Buddhist culture. Throughout the trip, the combination of high passes, mountain ranges, lakes, and deserts offers both adventure and natural beauty, making Ladakh a truly unforgettable destination.
