Kalpa is a small village located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh perched at an elevation of 2960m above sea level. It is a paradise for nature lovers. It is quite popular for its apple orchards and is mainly inhabited by the people of Kinnaur. Buddhism and Hinduism are two major religions followed here. A trip to Kalpa provides a perfect opportunity to attain spiritual enlightenment while being in the lap of the Himalayas. Mount Kailash, Mt. Raldang, and Jorkanden are visible from here and these peaks are surrounded by the Kinnaur Kailash mountain. Summer in Kalpa (April-June)
Summer is the best time to visit Kalpa, with temperatures between 8°C - 24°C, the weather in Kalpa is pleasant during this time and the sky remains clear which is the perfect time to view the Kinnaur-Kailash ranges. It is ideal for sightseeing and adventure activities like rafting on the Sutlej River, trekking in Spiti Valley, and overnight camping, road trip, etc. And all routes, including treks and roads, are open during this time in full-swing, also considered as the peak season.
Monsoon in Kalpa (July-September)
During the monsoon season in Kalpa, the temperature goes up to an average of 20°C in the day to 8°C-10°C in the night with an experience of moderate to heavy rainfall With unpredictable landslides. A lot of disruption in the transportation system is frequent in this area and slippery Thus, advisable, an unsafe destination to travel to during these months. It Is not permitted to go sightseeing and do different activities outside, but this is also a great time to go to Kalpa to simply sit back and relax. The view of tall mountains hidden in the midst of fog and the lush green meadows makes a photographer delight with its pristine atmosphere. So, it is advisable to check the weather forecast before planning a trip in the monsoon.
Winter in Kalpa (October-February)
Temperatures during the winter months rise only up to an average of 15°C to -10°C and it is delightful to visit during the initial winter month of i.e autumn since the entire valley takes on bright shades of orange, brown, and blue. It will witness a huge amount of snowfall and be a little dangerous for people traveling to Kalpa due to slippery roads. But, the view with snow-clad mountains, icy lakes, and the serene atmosphere has its own charm which is worth enjoying and also one can go apple-picking and give a crate of fresh apples as a thoughtful souvenir.
How to Reach Kalpa
Kalpa By Air
The nearest Airport to reach Kalpa is Kullu/ Bhuntar which is 225km, Shimla i.e 445km, and Dehradun i.e 138 km from Kalpa, and the nearest international airport is in Chandigarh, at a distance of 335 km, there's no direct airport to reach Kalpa, and Shimla Airport is well-connected to many major cities of the country. One can easily hire taxis from outside the airport or hire Government and Private Buses from the New and Old Bus Stands of Shimla or from Chandigarh Bus Station many buses are available for Reckong Peo which is 7 km away from Kalpa.
Kalpa By Train
The nearest railway station to Kalpa is Shimla, 244km that connects several major cities as well as the major railway station of Himachal Pradesh or Kalka Railway station 309 km that connects better with other cities of India. One can hire a bus or a taxi to reach Kalpa.
Kalpa By Road
The best way to reach Kalpa is by road with experiencing side by side enchanting views i.e on NH22 which connects Kalpa to Shimla and other cities. The highway merges with the Hindustan-Tibet road bifurcates at Powari to Kalpa and is perfect for motorable roads and frequent bus runs during the summer months. There is another bus route through Manali and Rohtang pass that goes in the Parvati valley and is frequently used by tourists. For tourists traveling from Delhi or Chandigarh or any other place in North India. One can take HRTC buses that go to Reckong Peo from Delhi and Chandigarh. The road to Kalpa is populated with beautiful scenic landscapes and makes an unforgettable ride.
