The town of Uttarkashi, the administrative centre of the same-named district, is more on the pilgrimage circuit than the daily tourist circuit. Additionally, like adventure sports such as trekking and mountaineering gain popularity, the importance of this area cannot be overlooked. There are a few high-altitude lakes in the region, and the Gangotri and Yamunotri glaciers lead to several major peaks, which are common among serious mountaineers. Treks to Nachiketa Tal, Dodi Tal, Dayara Bugyal (a high-altitude meadow), Sat Tal, Kedar Tal, Gangotri-Gaumukh-Nandanvan Tapovan, and Yamunotri are among the most common (the source of the river Yamuna).
