Kargil is well known for its rich cultural, historical, and political importance. Located at an altitude of 2676 meters above sea level, along with the banks of the Indus River. Kargil is known for the battlefield for the Kargil War which was fought in 1999. Kargil is presently a quiet and wonderful city, mid of the huge, bare mountains of the Himalayas with the freshwater of Indus flowing right beside it. Kargil city is the second-largest in the Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir after Leh.
